DAI-BULLETIN 8 BECOMING MORE
Dear friends and relations,
For DAI-WEEK 9, staff, students, and tutors will take up residence in Eindhoven at the Designhuis, Stadhuisplein 3 and the Van Abbemuseum, Bilderdijklaan 10.
DAI is the main partner for the caucus "Becoming More", a discursive and inclusive event, initiated by the Van Abbemuseum.
Our closed courses and classes, our semi-public seminars, interventions, and presentations, as well as
and our day of Roaming Academy project presentations on Thursday, May 25 will run concurrently or become entangled with VanAbbe's programming.
The museum has published a lovely and practical booklet about the wealth of public events during the caucus, which you can download here.
Federica Bueti, together with DAI & Open! Publishing Class students will explore and invent new formats for the live coverage of the various symposia taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 19, 20, 21 at the museum's auditorium. A link to their online activities is to be found at Open!.

Our four Roaming Academy classes will conclude their year-long trajectory (including study and collaboration on location in Boston, Casablanca & Ait Ben Haddou, Mexico City, and Salvador da Bahia resp. between March 13 and March 27, 2017 ) with four public moments as part of the Caucus Becoming More.
Next to experimental presentations of group work in progress, DAI is furthermore delighted to present accomplished work: a selection of artist books plus a reading by Ricardo Liong-A-Kong and a book launch with Jon Mikel Euba.

Living and working between Hengelo, Arnhem, and Paramaribo, Ricardo started making artist's books around the mid-eighties. Since 1991 his books are published under the imprint Ambassade van Bukistan. They contain subtle and poetic visual and textual observations on plant species and seeds, (family) relations, children’s games, mappings, language, and social behavior. When in Surinam, Ricardo regularly updates his friends and colleagues in the Netherlands by sending them 'Notes from Surinam'. Over the past years, he has been presenting these notes at public reading sessions in the Netherlands, accompanied by audio and video materials, as well as homemade peanut soup. The selection at the Van Abbe specifically highlights Ricardo's books on plantations in Surinam. The books presented at the library are available at the museum shop and at bukistan.nl.
Contest: Teaching as a form of art
In which a group of artists and curators attempt to fill a room with standing eggs. The work need not speak of patience or skill. What if it were about the fragility of the situation that the standing eggs produced? A situation that is by turns theoretical, aesthetic, pedagogical? Contest responds to Teaching as a Form of Art, a class that Ruth Noack leads at the Dutch Art Institute.

Writing Out Loud
Jon Mikel Euba will present Writing Out Loud, a publication containing transcriptions of eight lectures by the artist that were live translated from Spanish to English for the course Action Unites, Words Divide (On Praxis, An Unstated Theory), and which were presented across the DAI’s academic year 2014 – 2015 upon the invitation of If I Can’t Dance. The book was edited by Susan Gibb and published by DAI and If I Can't Dance I Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution.
Presents the Exhibition: Degrees of Freedom: Human, Robot and the Medium of Automation
Thursday 25 May - Sunday 28 May 2017
'Degrees of Freedom' is an exhibition in which ideas, forms and experiments related to the Dutch Art Institute’s Roaming Academy class 'In Dialogue with Robotics' are presented to the public. Many of the contributions to 'Degrees of Freedom' are not so much finalized artworks but rather pilots for projects that are at different stages of development. The title refers to the technical term used to describe the extent of a robot’s freedom of motion. This term explaining a robot’s physical characteristics and ability to move converges with wider questions and popular concerns about more ‘disembodied’ computational technologies and artificial intelligence in relation to social and political agency, labor, and financialisation. How can art-oriented research inhabit these interconnected fields of inquiry? In what way can it contribute to this discussion? These are the most general questions that this class has tried to engage with and what this exhibition attempts to address through its array of contributions. The project features a number of performances programmed to coincide with the opening, videos, sculptural work and other forms of practice.
The participating students are: Agata Cieślak, Rabea Ridlhammer, Katja den Dulk, Elvis Krstulovic, Iva Kovač, Malcolm Kratz, Mira Adoumier, Olga Micińska, Sonia Kazovsky, Sunghoon Kim, Ulufer Çelik. The course is tutored by Bassam El Baroni.

Students of On Praxis, An Unstated Theory (Writing Out Loud) will make a presentation comprising elements of an ongoing translation exercise that they have been undertaking across the yearlong course. This has seen them progressively translate the first chapter of Writing Out Loud into different media including drawings, notated scores, videos and sound.
The participating students are: Florencia Almirón, Astarti Athanasiadou, Giulia Crispiani, Valentina Curandi, Maike Hemmers, larose, Avan Omar Muhammad, Sergi Selvas, Despina Sevasti, Joy M. Smith, Nika Timashkova, Zhenia Vasiliev, Flora Woudstra, and Helen Zeru. The course is tutored by If I Can’t Dance and Jon Mikel Euba.
Southern Wave is a roaming online, radio platform for collective artistic practice, research, and study. It departs from the saturated terms of “global south” and “global north” to examine examples of economic, state, and cultural relations marked by centrality and marginality within global systems of domination and dependency.

Becoming more: …porous, resonant, supportive, coherent, tactile, entangled, animal…
For Becoming More…, the Curating Positions groups have worked on a series of interventions into the Van Abbemuseum responding to the senses in order to question the historical prioritization of the 'scopic' within histories of art and museology. The projects seek to open up other ways of sensing the museum and to alter the existing patterns, routines and relations between those engaged in it.

The contribution of the DAI’s co-op academy Deviant Practice takes place during two collective dinners (May 20 and May 21) of the caucus through a series of spatial, behavioral and performative interventions. Collectively, the project speaks to and from the different choreographic, social and political positions that are brought to the table at the end of our day.
