Bassam el Baroni is a curator, teacher and writer based in Alexandria (EG). El Baroni has been a theory tutor at the Dutch Art Institute since 2013. In 2005 he co-founded the non-profit art space Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum (ACAF) in his hometown of Alexandria, Egypt, and was its director until its closure in December 2012. El Baroni was co-curator of Manifesta 8, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art, 2010, Region of Murcia (ES) for which he curated OVERSCORE, an exhibition project in three different venues in the cities of Murcia and Cartagena. In 2015 he curated an exhibition for the HOME WORKS 7 Forum in Beirut, Lebanon, November-December. The exhibition explores the concept of ‘Constructive Alienation’ made visible by certain promethean strands of contemporary theory and is titled What Hope Looks like after Hope (On Constructive Alienation). El Baroni also curated the Eva International - Ireland’s Biennial, Limerick City, 2014, under the title of AGITATIONISM featuring newly commissioned and recent projects by over fifty artists. His curatorial projects spring from and loop back to his more theoretical research. He was also Co-Curator (with Anne Szefer Karlsen and Eva González-Sancho) of the Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF), 2013, in Vågan, Lofoten Islands (NO).
