DAI BULLETIN 5, January 2018: Thessaloniki

In this bulletin you will find the outline for the fifth roaming DAI Week of the 2017-2018 DAI Art Praxis trajectory. This time our program unfolds in Greece. Our 56 students, their regular tutors as well as guest tutors, all meet in Thessaloniki (a city rife with reminiscences of its multi-layered, multi-cultural past), for seminars, face-to-face meetings, curated city-walks, a public symposium, presentations and study groups interspersed with countless communal meals, the latter carefully prepared by the Thessaloniki based parents of alumna Viki Semou (DAI, 2010).

Staff & (guest)tutors on board:

Nick Aikens, Aslak Aamot Kjærulff, Bassam El BaroniAyşe Çavdar, Nikos Doulos, Galit Eilat, Köken Ergun, Florian Göttke, Annie FletcherDavid Hilmer Rex, Anthony Iles, Nataša Ilić, Victoria IvanovaNavine Khan-Dossos, Ricardo Liong-A-KongSven Lütticken, Marianna Maruyama, Savas Michael-MatsasRuth NoackRachel O'Reilly, Anna Pangalou, Emily Pethick, Julien ReidKatya Sander, Peter SattlerGabriëlle Schleijpen, Mama's Taper, Silvia Ulloa, Leire Vergara and Hypatia Vourloumis.

Thanks to Galit Eilat's project Syndrome of the Present which partly merges with our Planetary Campus, we are able to re-connect  with alumna Sonia Kazovsky (DAI, 2017), with Michailis Daskalakis as well as with Merel Eimers and Erden Kosova. For more information scroll to Sunday, 21 January.

We greet prospective student Eshan Rafi. They came all the way up to Thessaloniki in order to get a grasp on the DAI's educational praxis and daily routines, and we furthermore welcome Luca Napoli, master student at the Werkplaats Typografie, our sister program at the ArtEZ Graduate School, who from the 20th onward joins one of our COOP Academy study-groups.

During our stay Europe's precarious political reality is omnipresent: a huge mass demonstration took place on Saturday the 20th. Nationalists, including the fascists of Golden Dawn, had come to Thessaloniki from all over Greece in order to protest the inclusion of the word “Macedonia” in the name of the neighboring former Yugoslav republic. The same day a group of  60 to 70 extremists attacked the Libertatia squat in Thessaloniki and it was reported that the police did nothing to stop them. The building with a history of more than 100 years, and occupied by anarchist groups had been serving as a social center for the homeless and a school for migrants. It burned down to the ground. The next day clashes between anarchists and the police erupted throughout the city.
