PRACTICALITIES CONCERNING STUDENT FLIGHTS & ARRIVAL
A NOTE CONCERNING THE SAFETY OF THE TAP WATER AT LLUC: ALL WATER FROM ALL THE ROBINETS AT LLUC COMES FROM A SPRING IN THE MOUNTAINS CALLED PUIG FERRER - PEOPLE HERE AT LLUC HAVE BEEN DRINKING FROM THIS SPRING FOR MANY CENTURIES - IT IS CONSIDERED ABSOLUTELY SAFE.
Introduction:
For the very special occasion of this combined introduction & graduation week, we are to warmly welcome incoming, returning (now second year) students as well as DAI-generation 2019-2021 to whom we will bid farewell during our joint, temporary residence at Santuari de Lluc, in the Serra de Tramuntana on the Isle of Mallorca (Spain).
Annually, Santuari de Lluc, Mallorca's most holy site, hosts thousands of nature-lovers, ecologists & mountain-hikers, as well as an abundance of pilgrims venerating the statue of the Black Madonna or Mare de Déu (most famously during the 11 hour night walk in August, known as Lluc a Peu). On top of that ten-thousands of tourists simply come to visit and enjoy the awesome surroundings, historical buildings, ethnological museum and lovely, lush botanical garden with its around 200 indigenous plants from the Balearics. The Santuari's compound also accommodates a boarding school/choir school. Here live and learn Els Blauets, a world famous childrens choir that is very regularly performing in Lluc's church during the daily masses. Furthermore impossible to miss out on: an omnipresent collection of pretty peculiar figurative outdoor sculptures by the artist Joan Bennassar, a local celebrity.
Guesting (and hosting) at Lluc, means that we, DAI, will have to respect the core identity, and the mission of the place, centering around a concoction of ecology, spirituality and tourism in a Unesco protected, unique natural surrounding on an island that is hugely dependent on, as well quite deformed by, both international mass - as well as upmarket luxury tourism and the gentrification and colonization that comes along with that. Lluc's attempt to survive as a site of worship is tangibly corrupted by the pressures of our late-capitalist times. Presenting our artistic research at this mise en scène will both inspire as well as profoundly challenge us.
Monastic rules:
Speaking of the latter: we must urgently share a note here about the monastic rules and regulations: at 22pm it must be perfectly silent inside the building. From 23:00 onward absolute silence is also requested outside ~ in a quite wide circle around the build environment since the mountains amplify every voice and every footstep. We trust that we are in this together: keep in mind that the upcoming year will bring us landings in a variety of places, all with their local and institutional specificities. Sometimes we will retreat in silence and abstinence, while at other locations we will rejoice in exuberance.
