2022 - 2023 WHERE THE MOON IS UP ~ 19 Aeroponic Acts ~ Centrale Fies

Aeroponic ~ root systems nourished by air ~ Acts is the name given to the nomadic Dutch Art Institute’s final Kitchen presentations.

19 conversations-in-a-form.

Each act of 20 minutes offers a question as a practice of engagement.

One month after our COOP SUMMIT 2023 in Nida, Lithuania, where we forged our research into an assemblage of happenings (the outcome of the year-long collaborative enquiry by 6 study groups positioned at the heart of the DAI’s curriculum), we are now excitedly presenting the annual 'acts' of 20 minutes, each offering a question as practice of engagement. The AEROPONIC ACTS constitute one, out of several study components which the students have to accomplish, in order to conclude their two-year long journey with the DAI; with each other.

This year we (re-)invited esteemed respondents

Phanuel Antwi,

Ayesha Hameed,

Francesco Urbano Ragazzi

to share their improvised, spoken reflections and help us think through what will be embodied and proposed.

All 19 conversations-in-a-form are open to the public and will be anchored by

Elisa Giuliano.

Here, there, and anywhere tonight, under the brightest light of the world, that which dies each night descending into the realm of darkness and that which rebirths each day chasing the Sun. The Moon roams the widest territories. Is it wise to dwell in the moonlight just long enough to release one great choral howl?

Oh, let us be someone's moon!

Gazing, sparkling, looking from afar like the Moon ~ that we are not.                                Still, let’s all come to know how to keep our minds on the moon. How to, in our most beautiful dreams, endure and imagine the impossible, even when in despair.

We would be thrilled if you could join us IRL, but if this, (understandably), is not possible, we hope you will follow our Instagram, for this occasion fully TAKEN OVER by artists-alumni Nash Caldera & Dandelion Eghosa, or pick up on the LIVE STREAM (for which you will have to return here, to this page, on the 28th & 29th of July).

Our hosts

For this confluence, DAI alights again in the heart of the incredibly beautiful Valle dei Laghi in Trentino, Italy. We will be working and presenting at Centrale Fies: a Habsburg hydroelectric power plant running as a research center for contemporary performance practices since 1999. It is Dino Sommadossi and Barbara Boninsegna's vision and stamina that brings emerging performance artists, researchers and activists together in a space of great care, commitment and encouragement. It is an honour for DAI to be welcomed here as a friend. We express our warm gratitude to the entire team of Centrale Fies for their hospitality and the continuation of their interest in our work.

Co-curated between Elisa Giuliano and Gabriëlle Schleijpen (DAI's director) in conversation with Peter Sattler (production leader), Baha Görkem Yalim (video documentation), Hanna Rullmann (communication design) and Giulia Crispiani (written reports) and supported by the dream-teams of DAI and Centrale Fies.

We also give thanks to Hypatia Vourloumis and Quinsy Gario, who, over the past two years, have been providing the 19 emerging artists, curators, writers, activists and organizers with invaluable critical coaching towards their AEROPONIC ACT 2023.

Are you planning to attend?

Entrance is free, no reservation required, except if you wish to join our communal meals (our veg lunch costs 7 euro, our veg dinner 10 euro, including wine - cash only). In that joyful case, we kindly ask you to make a reservation no later then July 27. Please contact Jacq van der Spek <J.vanderSpek@ArtEZ.nl>
