Louna Sbou, cultural organiser and director of Oyoun, Berlin’s cultural hub for intersectional art and discourse, will set sail with the Global Sumud Flotilla. ~ The Global Sumud Flotilla is a historic civilian-run mission to peacefully end Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza and create a humanitarian corridor where states are failing to protect civilians and enforce international law. ~ Louna’s participation holds critical pertinence in Germany, where public administrations, aligned with international corporations, imposed a repressive funding and media regime targeting Palestinian culture and solidarity with Palestine. As part of enforcing this framework, the Berlin Senate actively defunded Oyoun in 2024 for hosting an event led by a Jewish anti-Zionist association. From 2020 Oyoun became a vital platform for internationalist and intersectional cultural practice. Its collectivist approach supported creative civil resistance to right-wing politics including rising anti-Muslim racism and antisemitism. Click to find more.

"The 13th Berlin Biennale, curated by Zasha Colah, explores themes of fugitivity, subversion, and art’s endurance under repressive regimes. Titled passing the fugitive on, one could read the exhibition as a ‘how to’ manual meant for a country undergoing a process of social transmogrification. ‘Foxing’––a noun turned into a verb– is how you communicate under illiberal regimes, hence the recipe: the artwork carries a message spoken in code. The sheer presence of so many encoded messages provides a diagnose for the erosion of democracy and constitutional guarantees. It’s an elegant proposition, and it’s elegantly articulated. But its theoretical elegance sometimes outpaces its political coherence. PHANTOMS OF PROMISE, curated by noncitizen collective's Afrang Nordlöf Malekian (DAI, 2022) & Christian Rossipal, attunes us to the ghostly traces of dreams and aspirations. For a migrant who has lost their family and friends or a home that will never come back, a type of phantom pain always returns – often across generations, inherited for decades or centuries. Not only does memory – or the memory of memory – return like a specter for those in exile, but the dominant image of the migrant is, as Sara Ahmed puts it, “a rather ghostly figure, haunting contemporary culture.” During a gathering at SAVVY Contemporary, we will listen and speak near the figure of the phantom, as in both promised futures and the ghosts of returning pain. We will consider the insidious and often broken promises of a better life and citizenship for the migrant, that echo across generations – as well as the specters of radically different futures that still are possible. 28 June, 2024 at 19:00.

“Becoming Stones”, an exhibition by Yunjoo Kwak (DAI, 2011) delves into the figure of the Jeju Simbang (Jeju Shaman) as the spiritual agent through which the aftermath of the Jeju Massacre has been, and continues to be, addressed. The 4.3. Jeju Massacre was the mass killing of alleged communist rebels on Jeju Island on April 3, 1948, during the US military occupation of 1945-1948. A massive death toll of 30,000, nearly one-tenth of the entire island’s population, resulted from the mass executions by both the Korean police and the US military forces.  This event highlighted the unresolved conflict and ideological divisions leading to the Korean War, and became one of the first outbreaks of violent ideological conflict in the Cold War period. Kwak’s new documentary, “Simbang” (60mins, 2024) offers a journey of grief through a series of movements, chants, tears, dances, laments, narrations, commonings, purifications and ritualisations that oscillate between the seen and unseen worlds. In Jeju Island, â€œì‹Źë°©â€ (Simbang, ç„žæˆż) refers to a shaman. “焞” (Sim) means spirit, and â€œæˆżâ€ (Bang) means space or room, evoking the spatial aspect of the shaman's body in connection to the unseen, untouched and unheard, yet powerfully animated world. Their body becomes a sacred vessel where the echoes of the past converge with the immediacy of the present, and glimpses of the future unfold. Todd Shepard’s 2017 book, Sex, France, and Arab Men, 1962–1979 (University of Chicago Press), investigates two historical phenomena not typically thought together: the aftermath of the Algerian war for independence and the movement for sexual revolution in France. His analyses, including discussions of the racist and sexist rhetoric within leftist and gay politics in France in the 1960s and ‘70s, provide a framework for thinking sexual politics against the backdrop of mid-century global decolonial movements.The Institute for Network Cooperation (INC) engages historian Todd Shepard in a consideration of the historical and contemporary relevance of his research. You are invited to bring your own rug to contribute to a rug-constellation. Lay down and get cosy together, drift off together. Bringing the domestic to the public realm, to tentatively explore new ways of being-together and offer a space for reflection, rejuvenation and introspection.

IT GO HAVE TO ADJUST. ON LANGUAGE AS PARASITE. Pelumi Adejumo (DAI, 2023) and Lucas Lugarinho Braga (DAI, 2023) participate, among other artists, in an exhibition at SAVVY in Berlin, curated by Sagal Farah and Billy Fowo ( who are also tutors of SAVVY's COOP study group at DAI). The show is part of a series of exercises, research and public programming reflecting on the parasitic character of language and on the subversive power of laughter. If we are “participants in the future of our languages” (Ocean Vuong), how can we make space for more variants of influences in order to facilitate the right climate and conditions for subversive feminist, anti-racist and de-colonial practices within art and publishing? If language is there to make space for our survival, can we find procedures for optimising our communication to aid the creation of networks that can parasitize towards the proliferation and development of liberating practices? The cheapest meat, commonly sold as a 'whole chicken’, provides the most common image of headlessness. In “Headflesh” the animal decapitates itself, but its wound is thriving and becomes a motor for movement. As a post-gender cyborg, genetically altered and abundantly multiplied, the chick/en/hen turns against the nuclear Oedipal family. Iga ƚƛćk (DAI, 2022) presents this performance, in collaboration with Miiel Ferráez (DAI, 2021) and commissioned by Tanz im August festival as a part of a parkour series "Interconnecting Dance & Ecology", on the final day of the festival (26.08.2023) in the Volskpark Rehberge, (sharp 14.00).
