Gamze Öztürk ~ A dream I had several decades afterwards of vivid reds and warm heads
With my bare feet running on hot gravel. I am longing for fertile soil. A huge lock of my hair in my mouth, torn by snakeheads. I take shelter under a tree, and suddenly I forget what I knew before. What did I forget? Snakes started whispering in my ear. “Where do you belong?” Falling further down into darkness. Where my bare feet touch the skulls of female bodies. Their voices sing from decades ago, ripped out of time. A red mirror in front of me. I see something staring at me. Flaming eyes, fringed head, carrying stolen babies in her arms. And a strange cleft between her lips, I assumed it was a smile. Al Karısı! I screamed. Am I on the other side?
It is a speculative fiction that dramatizes the transformation of Umay Ana, the most powerful female deity in Turkish mythology, or Cybele, as she is called in Anatolia. Imagine through dreams how she evolved from a deity to a malicious Jinn during her journey from the Steppes to Central Asia and then to Anatolia.
