Factory workshop: “Colognealism” Led by Łukasz Jastrubczak

The „open form” is egalitarian, non-hierarchical, democratic, anti-dogmatic, decentralized, asymmetrical. While taking a closer look at that concept the participants in this workshop, will try to reflect on Eastern and Western European neo-avantgarde approaches towards artistic production. The participants will be divided into two groups, that will ‘compete’ with each other in the public space of Cologne. The idea of ‘battle’ as a way to create new forms of narration out of a communicative process is a crucial part of the Mirage project, that Łukasz Jastrubczak is working on with Sebastian Cichocki. The workshop outcome will be presented during Roaming Assembly 16: Mad Tea Party: Gonzo Curating and Beyond.
The aim of this workshop is to create a specific type of communication among participants, that is based on visual language. By walking in the city we will try to establish relations within the members of the group as well as the surrounding space and the passers-by. We will use the means of improvisation as well as the basic principles of the “open form” concept coined by Oscar Hansen. The „open form” is egalitarian, non-hierarchical, democratic, anti-dogmatic, decentralized, asymmetrical. While taking a closer look on that concept we will try, with the participants, to reflect on Eastern and Western European neo-avantgarde approach towards artistic production.
The participants will be divided into two groups, that will ‘compete’ with each other in the public space of Cologne. Using a 1,5 meter long sticks, a piece of white, red and yellow fabric (approximately 1,5 x 1,5 meter ) and a blue string, the groups will make ‘moves’. While one team will be making a ‘move’, the other will be watching and subsequently will have to respond to it, and so on. The shape of the route of the walk in the city, will be determined by the drawing made by basketball coach, selected by participants from a group of 30 drawings.
The idea of ‘battle’ as a way to create new forms of narration out of a communicative process is a crucial part of a “Mirage” project, that Łukasz Jastrubczak is working on with Sebastian Cichocki.
The workshop outcome will be presented on Mad Tea Party: Gonzo Curating and Beyond. The initial step of “Mirage” was a creation of a book, which structure is based on a specific duel on image and text. Sebastian’s text (treated as “curatorial guide and reference”), written in Poland and based, in part, on earlier essays by Robert Smithson was answered with an image (a photograph of performative action or object, ephemeral installation or sculpture, a drawing) proposed by me, while travelling in the United States. In response to the image sent by email, another text was sent that was a guide for taking of subsequent image, and so on. We had 24 hours to respond.
The workshop is also inspired by a performative ‘battle’ of ‘visual tactics’ that took place in 1971 in Poland, and was initiated by Przemysław Kwiek, as part of a workshops with Oskar Hansen. Documentation of the initial performative game is under this link:
