2020-2021 COOP SUMMIT ~ 5 COOP study groups share their collective and collaborative research with each other and the public

WE ARE EXCITED TO INVITE YOU TO SANTUARY LLUC

(scroll for the introductions to each specific presentation)

On October 5 & 6, 2021 the Dutch Art Institute presents COOP SUMMIT 2021, DAI’s two-day annual polymorphic event around the outcome of the year-long enquiry by our COOPs: topical study groups positioned at the heart of the DAI’s curriculum. Over the past academic year, 5 COOPs, convened by 5 partnering institutions have called for active participation of both students and tutorial teams in collective and collaborative, imaginative, slightly unruly research trajectories.

After the sheer endless period of licking our wounds, of retreat and introspection, we are grateful and excited that the COOPS can finally go public on the sacred grounds of Santuari de Lluc in the Serra de Tramuntana on the Isle of Mallorca. Here we will gently offer our moderated, sequential pop-up research propositions to Lluc's by now returning visitors, be they nature-lovers, ecologists, mountain-hikers, pilgrims venerating the statue of the Black Madonna or Mare de Déu, or tourists simply visiting and enjoying Lluc's gorgeous surroundings, historical buildings, ethnological museum and lush botanical garden with its around 200 indigenous plants from the Balearics. (The Santuari's compound furthermore accommodates a boarding school. Here live and learn Els Blauets, a world famous children's choir that is regularly performing in Lluc's church during masses).

Landing at Mallorca's most holy site, means that we will have to respect its core identity and mission, a concoction of spirituality, ecology and economy, staged in a Unesco protected, unique natural surrounding on an island that is hugely dependent on, and quite deformed by, international mass tourism as well as upmarket luxury recreation for the super-rich, and the gentrification and colonization that comes along with both. Lluc's attempt to survive as a site of worship is tangibly corrupted by the pressures of our late-capitalist times. Presenting our artistic research, in this mise en scène will both inspire as well as profoundly challenge us.

If you happen to be in Mallorca on the 5th and or 6th upcoming you are, it goes without words, most welcome to join us at

Santuari Lluc

Placa Pelegrins 1

07315 Escorca, Mallorca

For those unable to join, we are delighted that curator and researcher Veronica Valentini will be among the public and will offer a written reflection to all of us, to be accompanied by Baha Görkem Yalim's photographs, while Nikos Doulos  eagerly looks forward to keep you update with glimpses of all COOP presentations on our Instagram account.

COOP study group Curating Positions: Bodies and Antibodies in Cinema presents

Roving Assemblage: Anything Ghosts

“Do you remember the refrain?” I ask you.

Your gaze is mobile, submerged, it reflects and you reflect. You walk around and in-to, listen to its shape. You are in the middle of a sound that is moving. This enormous body that you can feel but not perceive. Only traces and directions testifying of different positions. Are we moving as one? Are you still moving? Followers are leading and you forget about your destination. You’re finding your way through a choreography of interwoven temporalities, ghostly reappearing through all senses. Boundaries spilling over and spiralling into each other.

Curating Positions 20-21 invites you to move and walk together to explore recurrences, remnants and bodily memories that keep us going, to a scattered gathering where only two things are sure: we depart and arrive together.

Curating Positions: Bodies and Antibodies in Cinema = Marwa Arsanios, Leon Filter, Leire Vergara (tutor team) Krzysztof Bagiński, Miguel Ferráez, Elisa Giuliano, Maud Gyssels, Jan Pieter ‘t Hart, Nadja Henß, Niccolò Masini, Vera Mühlebach, Chiara Pagano, Mirjam Steffen, Anna Piroska Tóth, Isabelle Weber, Clara Winter ( student participants). Partnering institution: Bulegoa z/b

COOP study group ReSituating and ReCalibrating Hostipitality presents

HOS(TI)PITALITY WAVE

https://hostipitalitycoop.airtime.pro/

In days of displacement and distance, how do we transform and mutate? How do we arrive and be in motion?

Someone turned the radio on, no one turned it off. Someone moved a tongue across the land, no one knew whose tongue it was.

There once was a table that welcomed the waves, are you there, a voice whispered.

Where are the hosts? Another voice collapsed.

Who are the guests? The voice no longer sounds like a voice.

And the ghosts?

(pause)

Something turned the radio on. Nothing turned it off.

ReSituating and ReCalibrating Hospitality presents “Hos(ti)pitality Waves”. Departing from the radio station—which functions as a path within the radio programming itself—and performative acts gravitating around it, how can we speak of and reconceptualize cultures of hospitality in our times? With a focus on listening to images, the presentation will engage with speculative narrations of various genres as a means of rendering the invisible/visible, the audible/inaudible. Images will serve as maps to navigate the hybrid participatory stations which, along with the same spaces’ interstices, attempt in breaking the invisible borders.

Performative enactment, the sequential summoning of images and presences they carry in an act of storytelling, is a method based on Tina M. Campt intervention and proposal of listening to images. This intervention/proposal is aimed to address the quest of building radical archives of Black Diaspora. As Tina M. Campt suggests the visual archives, which are products of capture and subjection, cannot be reduced to be only a testimony of an encounter with power and state apparatus. Listening to images allows one to access their low and quiet frequencies and retrieve quotidian realities of those present and absent, within the frame of an image.

Listening to the images is a method of hospitality. It poses the question how to be a guest to the realities and stories unknown and how to revisit the hostile environment of an archive. As such the method becomes a guidance for our arrival to Mallorca, to the island surrounded by the waves of the sea, which are carriers of the stories and lived realities. Transposing the method of listening to images into a method of making images to be listened to is grounding the micro-radio station.

If you are on the island how can you tell where the water is coming from?

ReSituating and ReCalibrating Hostipitality = Akinbode Akinbiyi, Kamila Metwaly (tutor team), Mayar Alexan, Morena Buser, Miyoung Chang, Cristina Emmel, Michael Fischer, Litchi Friedrich, Hubert Gromny, Hannah Jones, Rene Landspersky, Gabriela dos Santos, João Polido Gomes, Sophie de Serière, Georgia Stellin (student participants). COOP study group On Tradition – Future Ancestors: let rhythm be your guiding light presents

I Wish I Were in the Pool With You Right Now

Previously on Sunken Island: the pneumatics of your past. We’re longing to lap up pool water, but the pool was drained two falls ago—we lick at the air anyway. Out out in in in - heh heh hah hah hah - aaa aaa ee ee ooo. Spit runs down the dry water slide, drip drip drips into my container mouth. I rub it into the split, bonding the edges together, turn, rub it into your sunken chest and hope it puts the wind back into you, so that we can chant underwater.

“I Wish I Were in Pool With You Right Now” is a multimedia performance. The rehearsal is ongoing. Our voices come together and rip apart; one is heard--it’s loud--then another, then another,  then another, then one fades out and yells, then silence, a gargle and a commercial break. It’s a broken cycle--a loop--pool--pool/loop--we’re already there--we’re inhabiting the pool at Santuari de Lluc from all our locations.

On Tradition – Future Ancestors: let rhythm be your guiding light = Snejanka Mihaylova, Rory Pilgrim (tutor team), Ilgin Akseloglu, Bambi van Balen, Felix Bahret, Alexandra Duvekot, Dandelion Eghosa, Raffia Li, Marilú Mapengo Namoda, Kari Rosenfeld, Rosa Ronsdorf, Lou Lou Sainsbury, Iga Świeściak, Marie Tučková́, Rhodé Visser, Eli Witteman, Zane Zajančkauska, Lau ten Zeldam (student participants). Partnering institution: If I Can't Dance I Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution.

COOP study group Reframing Climate Colonialism: Pleasuring the Radical Imagination presents

withering worms wander, wording worlding warning, weather winds wait

Wait, did you see the withering worms wander?

We lost them all. They were never ours. We tried to catch them. They shapeshift according to the environments they travel through. If you’d try to eat them, they would slip out of your hands like wet clay. Sometimes they turned into ropes, creating a safety net for all of us. Others would hide in the garden, burrowing to protect themselves from hungry travellers. In the depths of soils supporting us, we find refuge in composting shared stories.

Be welcome to become a part of our ecosystem, as the tasks of shaping, tying, tasting, digging and resting are re-organized and we-organized as we pass on the rhythms. Will you jump with us into the wormholes of the never ending burning garden or do we watch to see whether the winds wait?

Reframing Climate Colonialism, Pleasuring the Radical Imagination presents different materialisations and workshops that spread further the group’s one-year study. As a critique on the exploitation and destruction brought about by climate colonialism, the group will offer scenes of adaptability, sensuality, reciprocity, webs of care and staying with the trouble.

Reframing Climate Colonialism: Pleasuring the Radical Imagination = Ama Josephine Budge, Clementine Edwards, Ying Que, CJC Working Group (tutor team), Mia van den Bos, Dakota Guo, Csilla Klenyánszki, Elvis Krstulović, Emmeli Person, Liza Rinkema Rapuš, Alexandra Martens Serrano, Raul Silva, Marika Vandekraats (student participants). Partnering institution: Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons.

COOP study group CHUSMA 2.0: A Coalition of Gossips presents

PR৲NSE of the WH❀❀LE

CHUSMA COOP Study Group invites you to join us in attending to our cacophony concert convergence, our processional procedural premonition(s). Dig down & dive into the whirls and whispers; trans-missions of opacity, gossips, silence(s), soft sharp cut splice layer lower lover moan. Follow threads of (in)visibility; together, to gather, t(w)o tongue. We can’t wait to be t/here with you.

A non commonsensical time-map calendar of chusmatic manifestations. Collected opacities through excessive delivery on the celebration of a new holiday. A collectivity of daily whispers, miscommunicated gossips, and practices of confi-dances. Recipes for disaster and herbal brews of untidy tongues. Public rituals, bingos, and unseen signs of resistance; untied and unsung. Cat-egories, spooneries and coalitions of broccolinis. Pussygami wink me baby one more time. Give your fortune to your elders, dance your theories away, sing to your fire escapes, in a word: it’s a sausage you won’t understand.
