MERCEDES AZPILICUETA (DAI, 2013): OVERLOOKED KNOWLEDGE AND NEW PERSPECTIVES ~ At Art Rotterdam, taking place from 28 to 30 March 2025 at Rotterdam Ahoy, Prats Nogueras Blanchard from Madrid and Barcelona will present the work of Mercedes Azpilicueta. Her work will be shown in the New Art Section, curated by Övül Ö. Durmuşoğlu. Azpilicueta is fascinated by unheard voices and explores how art can contribute to rewriting history from a decolonial and feminist perspective. For Azpilicueta, history is anything but singular: she interweaves the stories of feminist icons, queer individuals, exiles and migrants — figures often overlooked in mainstream historiography — into complex and multidimensional installations. In doing so, she examines the subjectivity of language, history, narratives and objects, questioning their established meanings.

From 28 till 30 March some of our brilliant alumni and current students (more precisely: Bethany Crawford (DAI, 2019), Raffia Li (DAI, 2021), MOSs Social Club (Hannah van der Schaaf (DAI, 2026)), Ratri Notosudirdjo (DAI, 2026) Rosa Ronsdorf (DAI, 2021) and Lou Lou Sainsbury (DAI, 2021)) are all participating (separately from each other) in Prospects 2025 during Art Rotterdam. The Mondriaan Fund organises the ‘Prospects’ exhibition each year to give the visibility of starting artists an extra boost and to show what has been achieved in part thanks to a contribution from the Mondriaan Fund. An Artist Start contribution is intended for starting artists who have been working professionally for a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 4 years.  The contribution can be used for anything related to the development of work and art practice, such as research, material, equipment and projects at home or abroad.

Our one-day conference-festival is conceptualized by Antonia Majaca, with programming developed in dialogue with Bethany Crawford. This gathering will bring together DAI alumni, researchers, and practitioners to explore diverse manifestations of artistic intelligence and new epistemologies of crossing for the Symbiocene. We are delighted that we will be hosted by Het Nieuwe Instituut, building on the research resonances and continuing exchanges within the DAI orbit between Antonia Majaca and Ramon Amaro, Senior Researcher for Digital Culture and Lead Curator of -1 at the Nieuwe Instituut.
