2022-2023 ~ Factory 2.0: CASUAL TROUBLE WHAT ABOUT INSTITUTIONAL QUEERNESS?

When: 18:00 - 20:00

Location: TBA

At this stage of my "career," I am starting to be invited to deploy a queer anti-capitalist discourse in spaces that are complicit in the reproduction of the power structures I denounce, the people around the table all too entrenched in their comfortable existence to support the positions necessary for social change in ways that go beyond performative statements, timid approaches and metaphorical gestures. Quite obviously, the lack of urgency in this landscape reveals the accordance of its principal actors with the status quo. In short, I feel that in order to pay my rent, I am constrained to offer the small thrill of a revolutionary chant to a bunch of encrusted bourgeois.

What is our political agency as people whose subsistence depends on compromised institutions?
How to be a pragmatic agent of change while living as an artist in a capitalist country?
Is it possible to navigate the lack of integrity and ethics in the contemporary art world?

Taking the event of my kitchen presentation last month as an illustration of these dynamics (lol), we will discuss together strategies and tactics to navigate these unsavoury situations.

keywords: privilege, cronyism, tokenism, complacency, performativity
