How To Live & Study Together at PAF
PERFORMING ARTS FORUM (PAF)

The complete mission statement issued by PAF
PAF is one of the very few, truly open art residencies on the planet, so to speak: a political project of love and generosity! Our huge gratitude goes out to PAF's core collective for sustaining PAF’s vision and modus operandi, initially coined by the late theatre maker and founder of PAF, Jan Ritsema and for generously allowing us to be that DAI specific particle in their swarm.
By joining DAI to PAF, you commit yourself to complying to the house-rules as stipulated by PAF and DAI:
MOST IMPORTANT RULES AT PAF:
PAF is not a hotel or a facility serving you. It is informal. There is no staff.
It’s well functioning, maintenance and cleaning is dependent on every resident.
The general principles of PAF are:
– Don’t leave traces
– Make things possible for each other.
- The do-er decides
- Mind asymmetries
DAI brings a very large group of people to PAF. Normally PAF residents have booked as individuals or in small groups. We are extremely grateful that PAF allows for our, in their context, exceptional working conditions. Our specific conditions come with additional guidelines on top of PAF's general principles. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO READ THEM CAREFULLY:
GENERAL HOUSE RULES ON NAVIGATING SPACES
- The building is a bewildering maze of hidden corridors, halls, rooms, libraries, cellars, attics and courtyards. As you can imagine it is impossible to keep the cold outside. In order to keep, at least, our work and living spaces warm it is conditional to ALWAYS carefully close all the doors that you have opened behind you. Of course ‘classrooms’ should be aired frequently.
- During the DAI Confluence we are the only guests and we are welcome to make use of all the spaces that are not occupied by the regulars who live here. Our classrooms, tutor's accommodation and several communal spaces have been marked. Jacq made a ground plan where you can find the most important spaces. Jacq and Kaste are making PAF our home for this one week. PAF staff has final say about the facilities, in case of any problems or urgencies.
Please note that PAF is run mostly by volunteers. Members of the PAF team currently residing in the building are hosting us and are not to offer daily services. With respect to that, all requests/inquiries should be addressed to Kaste and not directly to the PAF team.
- The elevator is exclusively in use for transport of food and equipment by staff. Never use it by yourself !
- After 22:00 loud music and loud conversations are not allowed & soft music and conversations till 24:00: everybody in and around the building is entitled to enjoy a restful night.
LEAVING NO TRACES
- As there are no service workers or cleaners in PAF, we are all responsible to keep and leave the place in the same or better condition that we found it. So please be tidy and mindful.
- All cups, plates, cutlery taken out of the kitchens or dining rooms always need to be returned and put away in the dishwashers - remember there is no staff to collect stuff and the building is immense).
- Breakfast is served every day downstairs in the ballroom. Both students and tutors are kindly asked to bring the dishes back downstairs for cleaning.
- Upon arrival, students can pick up clean sheets and towels from the laundry room. Upon departure, both students and tutors are kindly asked to take them off and bring them downstairs.
- Departure day: a careful final cleaning round of all spaces that you have been using, including hallways, stairs and all communal spaces is paramount !
SMOKING
– DURING THE DAI CONFLUENCE NO SMOKING IS ALLOWED INSIDE THE BUILDING - Smoking in the garden OK at designated spots where big ashtrays are placed (under the stairs next to the ballroom and outside the mirror room - Kaste will indicate them to you). ~ here again: do not leave traces (luckily there are also plenty of ashtrays). WHEN SMOKING MAKE SURE TO NEVER STAND CLOSE TO, OR UNDERNEATH WINDOWS WHERE PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE THEIR CHERISHED SMOKE-FREE BEDROOMS.
CHEF’s KITCHEN + ACCESS TO SMALL KITCHENS & SMALL DINING ROOM
- Chef’s kitchen is off limits for all students all time, except for when you are on cleaning duty.
- Small kitchen is accessible for hot beverages/minor cooking ONLY during the designated times. Outside of these times, it is off limits. Please keep this space clean.
-The dining room next to it is off limits. From 10:30 onwards the space will be utilised for study or program related activities.
- The Living Room (opposite big Kitchen) is offered for tutors during breakfast and gathering when activities are not scheduled.
STORES IN PROXIMITY
- There is a supermarket and a pharmacy within 30 min walking distance. However; you are all advised to bring your most essential medicines (such as pain killers, fever medicine, throat pills etc) with you.
