December 18: Bring clothes/fabrics that you would like to REPAIR, REFORM, REPHRASE ~ The "Learning Community" organises an open session with Nine Postma (DAI, 2020) who asks:"What does it mean when sustainable solutions get appropriated for their aesthetic value? What other options do we have to reclaim ownership of consumerism?"
"We will be looking at Sashiko, a 17th century Japanese tradition of repairing or strengthening working class clothes. By creating stitched patterns and strengthening layers on worn out clothes, the Japanese working class found a way to resist the imposed prohibition of wearing decorative and attractive clothes. Now, Sashiko is known and used in the West. When buying jeans, the store offers to personalise your purchase by adding Sashiko-like embroidery to your newly bought item. What does it mean when sustainable solutions get appropriated for their aesthetic value? What other options do we have to reclaim ownership of consumerism? We will read, repair and discuss.
Bring clothes/fabrics that you would like to repair, reform or rephrase."
"The ‘Learning Community’ invites graduate students from the ArtEZ Graduate community and beyond, as producers to think about methods of curating and structuring knowledges, skills and experiences. Students explore new methodologies relating to their own practices, developing experimental formats for producing, learning and collaborative research outside the specific programs they are part of."
