The installation A Distinct Effort by David Bergé was presented as part of Following the Instructions, a discursive activation of the Archiv der Avantgarden(AdA) at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (SKD).
Following the Instructions is the last of four exhibitions - essays - created by curator Marcelo Rezende at the Japanisches Palais. They illustrate and probe the phenomenon of the 20th-century avant-garde.
A Distinct Effort is the third chapter in a series of works by artist David Bergé centered around a collection of photographs taken in 1911 by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (the future Le Corbusier) and August Klipstein throughout their Voyage d’Orient.
In this work David Bergé creates a narrative - extending our negotiation of foreign territories through a camera - a possible could have been conversation between the viewer and these "three" authors.
Curated by Laura Herman, the installation was first presented in September 2017 at the Ravenstein Galleries in Brussels, as a co-production between Z33’s research platform Studio Space and Platform 0090. The presentation was accompanied by a booklet designed by Olya Domoradova, with a text by curator Laura Herman.
