2016-2018 Areumnari Ee (South Korea)

06.10.17

Self-initiative and a drive to learn through experience are some of Areumnari’s defining traits. The fact that she has run her own gallery for two years supports this view. Adopting the anthology format speaks about her interest to collide past and present, which is a constant in her practice. Her recent work marks a decisive shift from using a real man’s testimony (as in her previous video The Scattered Limbs, based on the contrast between an old man’s oral testimony of his personal memories and the reality of the contemporary city where he lives) to the invention of a fictional character. Her enrolment in DAI comes at a crucial moment in her development, which hints at some interesting transitions: from the personal to the social, and from the body to the city, which surely will benefit from an intense period of research, discussion and exchange.
