For this joint venture, Maruyama has hired a professional massage therapist (Jo Lee) to work on her muscle pains while he reads aloud a poetic text she authored about language and its movement through the body. While making an artistic gesture of resistance to self-exploitative artistic practices through leisure and wellness activities, the performance also sheds light on the process of interpretation from written to spoken text. In Deep Body Massage, Maruyama publishes the text through a hired voice, the voice of a muscular male physical therapist.
