For her first solo exhibition marking the culmination of her residency at the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers which began in October 2014, Amsterdam-based Israeli artist Yael Davids has designed an installation that takes hold of the Laboratoires space. She explores the notions of territorial limit, distance and proximity, as well as the cultural meanings objects convey across their temporal and geographic shifts and displacements.
Pivotal to her artistic practice is the body, a body (that of the performer and the spectator) in constant migration, apprehended as a vessel in which individual and collective experiences intersect.
More broadly, the artist’s practice, situated between installation and performance, engages in a reflection on identity formation; it develops at the intersection of the private and political spheres, incorporating the conflicts that have in part shaped her life and subjectivity.
The exhibition will be running at the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers from March 13 to May 16, 2015, Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 am to 7 pm.
In the academic year 2014-2015 Yael Davids is the co-tutor in the DAI-project To Make A Work ~ Molecular Revolutions
