New World Academy #4: The Art of Creating a State
realized with the National Liberation Movement of Azawad (MNLA)

Following New World Embassy: Azawad, a fourth session of New World Academy, established by artist Jonas Staal in collaboration with BAK in 2013, takes place under the title The Art of Creating a State.

In short, this session is entitled "The Art of Creating a State", developed in collaboration with the National Liberation Movement of Azawad: a coalition of peoples from the north of Mali that since 2012 have declared their own independent state of Azawad. We will discuss the difference of the concept of the state in the context of colonialism and national liberation; discuss the cultural foundations of the state and its "compository nature": what makes a state? From the symbolic to the legislative, we will discuss the complex nature of the appearance of a new state. Apart from artists and political representatives from the National Liberation Movement of Azawad, such as Moussa Ag Assarid and Mazou Ibrahim Toure, we will have Jolle Demmers (co-founder of the Center of Conflict Studies); documentary film makers Rob Schroder and Gabrielle Provaas and designer Remco van Bladel as part of the three-day program. Our hope is that after an intense weekend of discussion and work, we will be able as a group to have understood both the cultural and political dimensions of different concepts of state-building, both from the perspective of colonizers, as well as from the perspective of resistance forces in our world today.
