Following the discussion of John Berger’s Way’s of Seeing and its influence on generations of artists and students, Adrian Rifkin will lead a seminar on the influence of French Theory on contemporary art in the late 1980s and 90s, looking in particular at the writing of Foucault on the photogenic paintings of French artist Fromanger. Students will be asked to each select a memorable line from the circulated text to bring to the discussion.

This DAI week we are dedicating to the production stage at which the group has arrived by now. In case of film of video production the students have now entered fully into the production process: shooting and first steps of processing the material (editing – presentation / installation ideas). Other materials will now be worked at more fully and be more directed towards a possible ooutcome.
For some of the processes the work might benefit from opening up a moment of the "research-in-production" to discuss and exchange with the rest of the group. We have asked some students to prepare such a semi-public moment to use the group as a first audience and test some ideas that are already reasonably far on the way.

Tuesday March 11

Today, To Make A Work will work on the issues of the seminar with Ricardo Basbaum and his notion of "the production of the artist", which fits perfectly with the seminar’s ideas around what it might mean to be working in a global art world today.

The group will read and discuss two texts in the seminar:- "The government of Self and Others", chapters 2 and 3, from Michel Foucault; and Basbaum’s text "Within the organic line and after".

Wendelien van Oldenborgh will present her work and in the discussion relate this work to the three terms and consider where these terms are relevant, useful or not as the case may be. In preparation for this there are some articles online, from Afterall or at the website of Wilfried Lenz Gallery where you can find information.

Afternoon: In the afternoon we will discuss ideas in Rustom Bharucha's book 'Another Asia' from the chapters on 'Cosmopolitanism' and 'Friendship.' We would also like you to read Christian Kravagna text 'Towards a Post Colonial Art History of Contact from a recent edition of Text Zur Kunst, which sketches out an important history. Together these include quite a lot of reading but I think worth it so please make sure that you get through the text in time. Both are attached with this email and you have a week. As discussed at our last meeting we would then like to follow up your proposal that everyone make a short statement about where they are with there work. Finally we should go through plans for the India trip talk in detail about the schedule and address any questions that come up.  Tuesday November 26
