2013 / Nine publications / Publishing Class How To Live Together series

Publishing Class is an imprint of DAI Publications, a collection of artists' books jointly published by the Dutch Art Institute (DAI) and CasCo - Office for Art, Design and Theory in collaboration with the Werkplaats Typografie. Publishing Class is also a curriculum designed by CasCo for artists studying at the DAI and is oriented around the act of publishing as a critical art practice that cultivates publicness and allows for forms of dissemination that challenge the constraints of time and space.

How to Live Together series, the third edition of Publishing Class, focuses on writing and publishing as a speculative tool and as a conduit through which communities are fostered. Over the course of a year the class sets out to 'publish' individually and / or collectively, with the aid of monthly guests. It is inspired by Roland Barthes' seminal 1977 lecture series that bears the same title. In that series Barthes developed the concept of 'idiorrythmy' to express a possible way of living together that preserved individual rhythms. Special guests to the class include: Ayreen Anastas & Rene Gabri, Tea Hvala, Christian Nyampeta, Benjamin Thorel and Hong-Kai Wang.
