Hôtel Philippoz is an art events and residency programme located in an old flat being renovated. In the course of a year, twelve artists will be invited to stay over at Hôtel Philippoz and start a dialogue with the space. They will work in the flat, adding a new history to the place, in layers.
Hôtel Philippoz is intended as a place to research the notion of trace and the problematics linked to the existence, preservation and transmission of memory.

I - TRACES

Hôtel Philippoz is pleased to host three international young artists for a first art event. Mathijs van Geest, Dico Kruijsse and Daphné Roulin will tackle the notion of trace during a week-long residency. The outcome will take the form of in-situ works, that shall question the status of the objects as the bearers and testimonies of history and time.

Mathijs van Geest (b.1985) received his BA at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam the Netherlands and finished his MA at the National Academy of Arts and Design in Bergen, Norway in 2011. Through subtle and detailed traces in the sideline of the everyday, his works are balanced, cryptic forms in a relationship that is both formal and deeply subjective. Work of his has been widely shown in Norway, The Netherlands and he has arranged and participated in various projects and exhibitions in France, Scandinavia and the Baltic region.

The work of Dico Kruijsse (b.1988) can be seen as a quest to find the hidden qualities of objects, material and everyday events. He communicates his vision on the world through a plurality of media. The resources that Kruijsse uses in his work are materials that not many people regard as aesthetic or important, such as sand paper, free paint samples or plaster board. Dico Kruijsse got his BA Fine Arts from the Willem the Kooning academy Rotterdam in 2009. Projects and exhibitions include : The emperor has chosen Shanghai CH, Kunstfenster#1 Goethe institute Rotterdam NL, RE: Amsterdam Gallery 10 NL, A metalogue on playing, Premiss Bergen NO, An Umbrella with a Sudden Gesture. O! Sils Projectspace Brussels BE.

Daphné Roulin was born 1978 in Fribourg, Switzerland. She practiced contemporary dance from 2000 to 2005, before joining Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD) and obtaining a master's degree in visual arts. Her installations and performances question the status of the objet, as well as the archival of performance and staging. She took part in various exhibitions in Switzerland and throughout Europe.
