During the trip to New York with our first year Master students of the Dutch Art Institute I have been collected words that create a summary of my observations as an artist in this city. Focused on the art world(s) and its economies I found the following words that have been used frequently: business, efficiency, scarcity of resources, competition, rumors, ability, money, hypocrisy, fame, branding, consistency, character and success.
These are very interesting words when you combine them with the practice of arts.
With this in mind I made an audio work based on the manual 'How to become a successful artist (in New York)'. This audio work is based on the excess of city noise I experienced in New York starting with hopes and promises that artists may have while being or living in New York.
The answers to the question 'How to become a successful artist' are told by a voice over. The voice is dominated by the noise of the city like the city sound of New York surrounded the personal space and destroyed the opportunity for dialogs and conversations.
Exactly the matter and dualism of 'hearing and understanding' and not being able to 'hear and understand' is what interests me in this.
