Current Values / an evening with economist Georgios Papadopoulos, artist Renée Ridgway (DAI faculty) a.o. / TENT, March 27
In this second edition of Current Values at TENT, artist, freelance curator and writer Renée Ridgway will speak about her ongoing project 'Beaver, Wampum, Hoes' where the concept of 'cultural currency' takes a central role. The coinage 'cultural currency' concerns the (e)valuation of forms of currency, along with their accountability in (cultural) transaction. Within cross-cultural interdisciplinary fields of research (artistic, sociological, anthropological, ethnographic) notions of (cultural) currency collide, bringing with this intersection the problems of transaction in cultural exchange regarding value. The focus of Ridgway's lecture looks at a cultural currency, 'wampum' in relation to its valuation –either moral, physical, spiritual- as a symbolic economy within a socio-linguistic framework.
Ridgway organises 'Roaming Academy' at the Dutch Art Institute, which explores the relationship between art and its economies.
