Impakt Festival 2012, "No More Westerns!" / Foundland (Lauren Alexander (DAI, 2011) and Ghalia Elsrakbi) invite you to "The Impossible Black Tulip of Cartography", where they will present "Journey to Ard al Amal".
Dearest friends and colleagues,
Foundland is very happy to announce their collaboration with Impakt Festival 2012, "No More Westerns!
Under the curatorial direction of Cher Potter (ZA/UK) and Sam Culp (CHINA/USA), the festival exhibition as well as extensive programme of screenings, talks and much more, explores shifting global trends of media production, distribution and economy in a non-Western context.
Foundland (Lauren Alexander, ZA & Ghalia Elsrakbi, SYR) enters a new domain of research related to found imagery from social media within the context of the Syrian Revolution. For the Impakt exhibition called: "The Impossible Black Tulip of Cartography" we present a video and photo installation called "Journey to Ard al Amal". We explore cartoon protest imagery (of Western and non- Western origin) created by the Syrian opposition movement. We speculate how popular characters and animations, dubbed from Japanese to Arabic or adapted from Walt Disney play a valuable role in imagining present day heroes and villains.
