DAI PUBLICATIONS is a collection of artist's books published by the Dutch Art Institute. For its production the Dutch Art Institute (DAI) has formed a unique partnership with the Werkplaats Typografie (WT). DAI and WT, both located in the city of Arnhem, are master's degree programs of ArtEZ – one of the major art academies (kunsthochschulen) in the Netherlands – and dedicated to the experimental education of artists and designers for furthering their creative engagement with the world.

In close collaboration with one or more guest editors, artists of DAI had teamed up with designers of WT to publish a work in the form of printed matter each year. From very diverse perspectives they reflect on publication as a versatile medium.

Gabriëlle Schleijpen, head of the DAI program, founded DAI PUBLICATIONS in 2003 as an experimental and innovative research and publishing platform. Since its inception more than 90 artist books have been published and since 2006 has gone under the supervision of annually appointed collection editors: Joke Robaard 2006, Maureen Mooren 2007, Emily Pethick 2008, Delphine Bedel 2009 and 2010.

LECTURES
Seth Siegelaub will speak about copyright and economic issues concerning independent radical publishing, including art books, based on his publishing experience with the Chilean book 'How to Read Donald Duck', the so-called 'Xeroxbook' and the 'Artist's Contract'. He will specifically address free access to information and the practical problems of distribution in a world of dominated by capitalist property values.

Daniel McClean will discuss copying in art, copyright law, and his role as both a curator and a lawyer, focusing on the tension between practices of copying in art and the constraints imposed upon these practices by copyright law. The recent project 'Free Sol LeWitt', which McClean co-curated with Superflex at the Van Abbemuseum questions models of authorship in art. He will also discuss important trials involving artists, including Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons.
