Artist and trained carpenter Olga Micińska (DAI, 2018) made a new commission for A Tale of a Tub's current exhibition The Lips of History that builds A Tale's need for a dedicated work space within the building—both for its daily ‘office’ tasks and for its educational activities. Drawing on the wooden desks sat at by telephonists throughout history, the question of (gendered) labour at the heart of telecommunications operations and the different cable systems and conduits making up these networks, the two modular bodies of furniture produced by Micińska hold court on A Tale's mezzanine, ready to become reconfigured in different ways depending on the needs within the space. On June 23, 2024 Micińska will be in conversation about her work with fellow artist and collaborator Harriet Rose Morley, with whom she recently founded The Building Institute—a non-formal, experimental platform connecting and supporting women and queer builders in their professional development within the broadly considered field of construction work.

The Building Institute also aims to emancipate the undermined knowledges dwelling the craft domains and uses a range of tools to execute its mission, including educational activities, public talks, exhibitions, advertising campaigns and publications. The initiative is currently being developed into a membership-based organisation—a process that Olga and Harriet will reflect on throughout the course of the talk.
