PENUMBRA
INTRODUCTION:
The penumbra is a space of partial illumination, specially during an eclipse. In vernacular speech, the penumbra designates an area of uncertainty or intermediacy between two mutually exclusive categories. Inspired by radiance and fluctuant perception, the seminar will concentrate on Phenomenology as the study of conscious experience.
The course will investigate early lectures by the philosopher and mathematician, Edmund Husserl (1859-1938). Our studies will concentrate on his seminar, The Basic Principles of Phenomenology to reflect on intentionality, reduction, and empathy. Following this introduction, we will turn to a larger corpus of writings in Phantasy, Image Consciousness and Memory (1898-1925), as well as the terminal text, The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology (1954).
The seminar will sail away from continental philosophy, flowing into collective reading, peer review, thesis development, and a perception diary
