Abstract

In this thesis I explore and further investigate my personal research around the concept of the photographic image. I suggest three key terms to apply in a reading of a photographic work: Image, Place, and History. I have focused on three case studies of photographic works by the artists Ilit Azoulay, Thomas Demand and Candida Hofer. Each chapter concentrates on one of the artists and the questions and contradictions that are raised through the suggestion of a reading of their work through these concepts. This text offers various links and possible relationships between the three terms, and attempts to encourage a further questioning of the image, its medium and its relationship to the viewer.
