DAI-bulletin 2007-2008 number eight April 2008
This is the eight issue of the monthly DAI-bulletin in the academic year 2007-2008, informing you about our program, about important dates and events.
///////// DAI Week April 2008 /////////
Instead of asking its master students to come to 'school' on a weekly base the DAI offers an alternative educational environment: during one week a month (so 11 times per year), everyone who is involved in DAI stays in Enschede day and night and takes part in a very full programme consisting of lectures, seminars, projects, excursions, workshops, and evaluations of his or her own work, which lasts from early morning until late at night. During the DAI week, cooks prepare the afternoon and evening meals that staff, students and guest lecturers from all over the world take in the cosy canteen. During the week participants in the programme spend the night at one of the two DAI houses in the centre of Enschede.

On Saturday 26 April and Sunday 27 April 2008, the Veenfabriek and the Art History Department of Leiden University organise the Symposium on Sound in Scheltema in Leiden. This symposium is a gathering of scientists, performers and artists. Lectures as well as performances will focus on the issue of mutual influence between art and science, more specifically with regard to sound. The Canadian art historian Jonathan Sterne and the American composer David Behrman have been invited as keynote speakers. Pièce de résistence of the Symposium on Sound is the launch of the eightteen-strong Siren Orchestra, performing five new works composed by John Butcher, Yannis Kyriakides, Martijn Padding among others. Next to this the American composer and performance-artist Laurie Anderson will be interviewed by DAI mentor John Heymans in public on art and science.
Furthermore the British essayist and curator David Toop will launch the exhibition On the Sensations of Sound. This show departing from the idea of sound as a material, is organised as part of the symposium in cooperation with Museum De Lakenhal in Scheltema.
