ISTANBUL:  Lado Darakhvelidze at the 11th Istanbul Biennial & Booklaunch Here as the Centre of the World at SUMA, Contemporary Art Center.

AMSTERDAM:  The last lecture of The Old Brand New at the Stadsschouwburg with the speakers Dick Hebdige and Keith Sawyer & The Jungle Is A Skyscraper: A performance by Stefanie Seibold and Teresa Maria Diaz Nerio at Frascati.

ISTANBUL: Lado Darakhvelidze at the 11th Istanbul Biennial : students, staff and ( some of)DAI's  faculty are traveling to Istanbul to attend the opening of the 11th Istanbul Biennial,'What Keeps Mankind Alive ?' ,curated by WHW. One of the participating artists is Lado Darakhvelidze, currently a master student at the DAI. Lado will show his project Ideal Media, an installation with black boards and rocking chairs that taps into our daily ritual of ‘consuming media’. Location: the “Greek school”, Ferikoy-i-Hurriyet Cadessi  No 5, Istanbul, not far from Taksim square.

ISTANBUL: booklaunch Here as the Centre of the World : On Sunday September 13, at 17 pm, you are most welcome to attend the public launch of the book Here as the Centre of the World, kindly hosted by SUMA, Contemporary Art Center, Yanikkapi Sokak No.3 Kat.2 Karaköy 35005, Istanbul. Here as the Centre of the World was a transnational artistic research project that took place in six cities worldwide. It was initiated by the DAI and was curated by Lucy Cotter, Gabriëlle Schleijpen and Alite Thijsen. The book takes the project as a departure point for further reflection by artists, writers, theorists and cultural producers.The book features a rich array of visual material arising from a series of collaborations between artists from Beirut, Damascus, Diyarbakir, Enschede, Khartoum and Taipei.  With texts by Lilet Breddels, Lucy Cotter, Tony Chakar, Pascale Feghali, Rana Hamadeh, Ozkan Gölpinar, John Heymans, Erwin Jans, Khaled Khalifa, Bechara Malkoun, Rania Mamoun, Susannah Mira, Kawa Nemir, Alite Thijsen, Jerlian Tsao, Emily Williams, and Rajagopalan Radhakrishnan. Here as the Centre of the World was published by Archis, designed by Marco Balesteros / Werkplaats Typografie and kindly supported by the Mondriaan Foundation and the Municipality of Enschede. Several artists and writers will be present at the launch.

AMSTERDAM: The Old Brand New is a monthly lecture series in the English language in Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam revolving around the concept ‘new’ in the arts. It is co-curated by the DAI ( together with several other organizations at the forefront of contemporary art & art education).15 September, 8.30 pm: What is New? The last lecture of The Old Brand New with: Dick Hebdige, an expatriate British media theorist and sociologist, most commonly associated with the study of subcultures, and its resistance against the mainstream of society. Best known for his influential book, “Subculture: Meaning of Style”, originally published in 1979 and Dr. R. Keith Sawyer, a professor of psychology, education, and business at Washington University in St. Louis,  considered to be one of the world’s leading scientific experts on creativity and improvisation. www.theoldbrandnew.nl

AMSTERDAM: If I Can't Dance Tonight is a monthly series of gatherings featuring an eclectic programme of performances, mini-exhibitions, conversations with artists, discussions, film screenings, etc., all drawing the viewer into the question how visual artists nowadays are dealing with performance and performativity. This edition: The Jungle Is A Skyscraper: a performance by Stefanie Seibold and Teresa Maria Diaz Nerio revolving around the costume politics of the legendary jazz formation Sun Ra Arkestra, will take place at Frascati on September 22 at 8 pm. Teresa Maria Diaz Nerio graduated from the DAI last July. Stefanie Seibold was the course leader of a year round workshop in 2008-2009, which was developed by If I Can't Dance for the DAI.www.ificantdance.org
