The Dark Slumber of the Earth
28 October – 9 December

JOEY RAMONE is proud to present The Dark Slumber of the Earth, the 2nd solo exhibition in the gallery by artist duo Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum. The exhibition opens on Saturday 28 October at 5 - 8pm and runs till Saturday 9 December 2017.

Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum will present two works exploring the nature of authorship and appropriation: Naturaleza Muerta con Recipientes (Still Life with Recipients), and Libro de los Plagios (The Book of Plagiarism).

Naturaleza Muerta con Recipientes is an installation with objects cast from abandoned plaster moulds that have been recuperated from the ruins of an old porcelain factory in Basque Country. A close look at the casts reveals how nature has contaminated the designs of the original commodities with its own aesthetic vocabulary. Roots have penetrated the moulds and rainwater ate away at their soft and brittle walls, remodelling the void contained within. These hollow spaces have spawned a collection of porcelain objects that might thus be considered hybrid artefacts, shaped by the intersection of human histories and natural cycles of growth and decay.

Libro de los Plagios consists of large charcoal drawings, based on black and white photos from the book of the same name. This polemical book was published in 1991 by the Basque sculptor Oteiza, and compares a series of abstract modernist sculptures by various artists with his own work, in order to demonstrate what he perceived as plagiarism of his ideas.
