2017-2019 Joannie Baumgärtner (BRD)
Joannie Baumgärtner graduated from the AdBK, Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nuremberg, where they have been working as a Tutor at the Department of Art Theory and Education. Their practice is wide-ranged, from installation to printed matter, from performance to interventions in comic books. Many of their most salient projects have been done collaboratively, such as the publication A Displaced Self, and their recent exhibition in the Akademiegalerie Nuremberg, called Life Functions Critical. Interestingly, the latter project’s stated intention is to ‘turn the approach to science-fiction around, not targeting possible shapes of a future, but taking forms and objects of the contemporary everyday life and repurposing them under aspects of scientific fictions.’ This project is an investigation of the fictional possibilities of the contemporary and their figuration within their modernist heritage, engaging with modes of labour, means of production, and commodities at once.
