Re/fashioning the Limits of the Sayable - Banu Karaca
Focusing on different types of image production - as well as counter-production - in the urban space of Istanbul under the conditions of state violence and protest, this presentation looks at strategies that evade hegemonic delimitations of perceptions as well as the fragilities that potentially call visual culture back into the nationalist frame. Probing the conditions of image-making, artistic and otherwise, of their circulation and foreclosure, the presentation explores how visualizing practices are implicated in technologies of power but also how these practices periodically suspend the limits of the sayable. On the background of a renewed clampdown on free speech in Turkey, it proposes that the question remains if the limits of the sayable can not only be suspended once more but moved to other ways of making politics, including resisting the call to exclusionary fault lines, and the investments and privileges they create.
