DAI director Gabriëlle Schleijpen to present DAI as Roaming Academy @ GLOBAL ACADEMY? Learning and teaching art in the globalised world ~ Conference in Salzburg, 5/6 August 2016
Today, "education" is a central topic in the global field of art. The explicit question here: how to learn and teach art in the globalised world?
State academies are increasingly geared towards globalisation; countless studio programmes for residencies worldwide enable artists and curators to research and make contacts in specific places. The focus of this conference, however, is on models and initiatives for diverse formal, but mostly informal, opportunities for artistic training and further education, as for example Spring Sessions in Amman, ruangrupa in Jakarta, Casa Tres Patios in Medellín, RAW in Dakar, DAI's Roaming Academy in Arnhem, or Open School East in London. Some of these institutions programme exhibitions, lectures, and residencies, as well as courses, workshops of different durations and other training modules; others are principally "schools". The selection given here is by way of example, simply for comparison between various models, methods and forms of organisation. Common to all of them is on the one hand their global perspective, and on the other their local anchoring, together with their aspiration to constant renewal and the development and testing of new models.
The conference asks:
What constitutes art education and further education in the global field of art today?
What are the challenges of education and further education in art (curating/art criticism in the global field of art?
What historical examples are relevant in this context?
What models are there, and how do they work?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of self-organisation/state institutions?
What kinds of exchange are feasible?
How can a common language be found, and how do translation processes work in this context?
