2005 Reality Sandwich ~ A DAI Public masterclass tutored by Hans van Houwelingen
February 10 till April 20
Practical part: a ‘real’ assignment by Vastgoed Groep Drienerlo for an artistic intervention on the campus of the UT (‘cover a pump so that the adjoining architecture will suffer less from it’s presence’).
All participating students will first do research and then develop and in the end present a proposal. There will be a (limited) budget to refund expenses for the presentation on Wednesday, April 20.
UT’s ‘kunstcommissie’, the architect and the director of the UT’s real estate dept. will judge the proposals and choose ONE to be executed for real with real money.
Hans van Houwelingen will coach the DAI throughout this proces.
Hans van Houwelingen is an unconventional & critical but nevertheless highly acclaimed Dutch artist, born in 1957. He studied art in Groningen and later at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam.
As a result of his uneasy relation with art in ‘the white cube’ he became more and more involved in large comissions for artworks in public spaces. Extremely experienced as far as dealing with commisioners is concerned and still an outspoken and original advocate of the independent stand or position of the artist.
Theoretical part: In February Hans van Houwelingen's new book Stiff will be published.
Participants in this project will be the first ones to study this book with texts on art in public space and share thoughts, questions and remarks not only with Hans van Houwelingen himself but also with some of the authors he invited to contribute with texts.
DAI will invite Bram Kempers and Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen for lectures and discussion.
A maximum of 12 Studypoints can be accredited for participation and for the quality of the endresults.
