Would it be possible to re-invent a 'better' future of collective-individualistic architecture? How might that 'better' future be worked upon without re-writing the past? And which histories, untold and unrecognized, might come to the surface and drive us in such moments of re-invention?

This presentation evening is the result of a long-term project developed by the artist Yunjoo Kwak since 2013 together with the neighborhood initiative Samen Krachtig Plan van Gool in Amsterdam Noord. It is part of her research project "A Season in Hell," a collaboration supported also by the Amsterdam municipality, the 'Bewonersgestuurde Wijkontwikkeling' (BGW). The project's main goal has been to self-organize and implement a plan by citizens in which the government has a facilitating role, after several consecutive years of government spending cuts. The end result, the film 'A chronicle of Plan van Gool' reflects - amongst other things - how local government and local social dynamics can influence each other, with Architecture as a mediating element between these two agencies.

During the research of "A Season in Hell", two works by the artists Patrícia Pinheiro de Sousa and Go-Eun Im & Igor Sevcuk, sharing sympathetic investments in the language of cinema, archival materials and architectural considerations, were discovered by the artist. On the one hand, all three projects experiment with cinematic approaches in various ways: as cinema performance, as video essay and through documentary fiction. But in other ways they are distinguished. The performance piece by Patrícia Pinheiro de Sousa, Bar Luso, departs from documentary film's asynchronous times and historical referents, to tackle censorship and propagandistic discourse, embedding the experience of the filmed present with an absence of memory. Differently to this, the film Because the outside world has changed... is a work-in-progress by Go Eun Im's and Igor Sevcuk that began as an intuitive exploration into the architectural and institutional transition of what was formerly known as Amsterdam's Filmmuseum as it became the EYE Film Institute. Through this work-dialogue, these two artists continue to test (and taste) technics of solidarity, drawing on a variety of image technologies that influence our ways of relating with the world.
