Composing Through Words is a Het Veem Theater event initiated and curated by Fleur van Muiswinkel. The event brings together the performance work of six renowned national and international artists of recent generation including Sarah van Lamsweerde, Mercedes Azpilicueta, Ruth Beale, Nicole Bachmann, Rosie Heinrich and Tight Jans+2.
Composing Through Words explores the shapes and structures of language and text, and how they both determine our perspective on our daily reality, culture and history. The programme takes the audience along five performances and a concert.
Central in the performances '80 Words' by Sarah van Lamsweerde and 'Performing Keywords' by Ruth Beale, is the construction of language and it's social implication. Mercedes Azpilicueta, Rosie Heinrich and Nicole Bachmann, on the other hand, focus on the act of performing and the influence of the voice, rhythm, intonation and the verbal and non-verbal qualities of the body. The band Tight Jans +2, with visual artist Jasiek Mischke as their front man, closes the evening with a poetical spoken word performance.
Fleur van Muiswinkel attended Goldsmiths University and curated various (inter)national exhibitions and events. She is interested in the usage of language by visual artists, and researching it's influence on social cultural issues.
The performative act, according to Van Muiswinkel, appears as the potential investigation into the construction and transformation of meaning through the apparatus of the voice, the act of speech, and the role of the body and its abilities to communicate both verbally and non-verbally. With this event, Van Muiswinkel opens the space for a conversation about the different approaches and forms of composing through words in contemporary visual art, theatre and music.
