SYLLABUS 2013 - 2014
Kindly hosted by SALT, Galata we presented our 2013 - 2014 curriculum by means of a series of lecture-presentations, delivered by project curators and tutors during two intensive days as part of our introduction week in September 2013 in Istanbul.
Please find the descriptions to the curriculum components below. This year (after a critical evaluation of last year's structure where we had different trajectories for first and second year students) all students will now share all projects and classes. So no distinction between the year- groups.

Co-op Academy:
Each year, DAI presents three, one year-long projects on specific research questions curated and tutored by our structural partners Casco, If I Can't Dance and the Van Abbemuseum. All students are invited to participate in one of these projects. Participation in a project includes participation during DAI weeks ( seminars, workshops and individual tutorials), self-tuition outside DAI-weeks, occasional participation in events that take place outside the DAI weeks as well as participation on location during (possible) research trips. Co-op Academy aims to bring together a variety of practitioners in curated projects around shared questions and concerns. Participants develop skills and acquire more knowledge through artistic and theoretical research, through production and collaboration.

Roaming Research Academy:
Roaming Research Projects entail both individual as well as collaborative research and production around specific curated trajectories of one year, offered by invited curators and their guests and selected partnering organisations. After a process of "match-making"( each student can only participate in one of three Roaming Research projects) we will work in smaller groups. Participation in each specific Roaming Research project requires full presence during DAI weeks ( seminars, workshops and individual tutorials), self-tuition outside DAI-weeks, occasional participation in events that take place outside the DAI weeks as well as participation in workshops etc. on location during the 10th DAI week, a transnational research trip of 10 or more days. Students do not only engage with artistic and theoretical research, but also with curatorial concepts and methods as well as with production and communication strategies.

How To Do Things With Theory
How to do Things with Theory means participation in one (out of 3) classes: a two year - long trajectory of reading groups, guestlectures and tutorials. Writing a thesis is the final stage. After careful matchmaking each student teams up with one of the three theory -tutors at the DAI and will be supported by the same person throughout the two-year long trajectory. The student is expected to bring forward an artistic theoretical question arising from, and therefore closely related to his/her artistic practice. During the first year the student prepares by further deepening his/her theoretical research, always in some relation to artistic practice. At the end of the first year, the student should have laid the foundations for the writing of the thesis. The thesis must be supported by a concentrated reading of at least six titles. The thesis should have a minimum of 10.000 words and must be presented in English and is to be evaluated by the tutor who is part of the How To Do Things With Theory – team, supported by an invited independent reviewer (selected by the tutor and approved by the DAI's director).

The Kitchen / Not The Restaurant
Every DAI week, the DAI organizes one full day of individual lecture-presentations by seven students, according to a curated schedule. This engaging format has been developed, chiseled and performed at the DAI on a monthly base since 2003. Many alumni consider the competences they gain from this consistent and quite typical feature on the DAI's 'menu' to be among the most formative in regard to their artistic development.
The students present an update of their research in the form of a lecture or lecture-performance of exactly 20 minutes to an audience consisting of the Head of Program (chair) plus 2 invited independent guests (theorists or curators and artists) their fellow students plus, occasionally, members of the general public.

Outside Academy
In addition to the compulsory components the DAI offers students and alumni to participate in projects organized by (or together with) third parties outside the DAI curriculum. This year we offer four short collaborative workshops in collaboration with BAK in Utrecht and with See You In The Hague (a joint enterprise between many organisations). The workshops on offer engage in the area of art, politics and activism and aim to imagine alternative ways of dealing with urgent political issues of our time.
