Abstract

This thesis attempts to trace the arrival of decolonial discourse within the art scene of Latvia. By analyzing what kind of theoretical ideas have been relevant in texts, artworks and exhibitions that approach ideas of colonial and de-colonial, the potential of decolonial curatorial approaches that would be rooted in the histories and positionality of so-called Eastern Europe is being discussed. While close-reading artworks, exhibitions, texts and discursive events I engage with the ideas of Walter Mignolo, Catherine E. Walsh and Gloria Anzaldua as well as social anthropologist Dace Dzenovska and explore the complexities that arise when terms and ideas of decoloniality are being localized in the context of post-soviet.
