17 February, 2024 ~ If I Can't Dance I Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution warmly invites you to join Framer Framed for a programme of events marking the launch of Stories of Wounds and Wonder, an experimental children’s book by art researcher, writer and pedagogue Nuraini Juliastuti (guest tutor at DAI, 2022-2023 ). The publication presentation will be turned into a radio play performed live by Mercedes Azpilicueta (DAI, 2013), Astrit Ismaili, Nuraini Juliastuti, and Ratu R. Saraswati. The play is followed by a conversation between Juliastuti and architect, artist, and cultural producer Yazan Khalili, and will touch upon the main themes of the book and their intersection with Khalili’s expansive practice, including anti-colonial knowledge production and community-based infrastructures, intergenerational publishing, drawing as research, and cross-species solidarity. And the afternoon will be hosted by If I Can’t Dance programme curator Sara Giannini and artist Reza Afisina, (both former DAI guest tutors) with music selection and groovy intermissions by Cempaka. Imagined as a script for intergenerational transmission, the publication emerges from an inquiry into storytelling as a form of archival technology within the preservation and transmission practices of what Nuraini calls the ‘commons museum’.
Nuraini Juliastuti's Stories of Wounds and Wonder narrates cross-species practices of survival across the Indonesian archipelago, centring the perspectives of local animals such as endangered monkeys, cosmopolitan rats, migrant sparrows and fugitive dogs. Intertwining different registers and modes of reading, the book combines dialogues, songs and drawings, with contextualising essays and an extensive notation. Inspired by the work of Indigenous and rural activist communities based in Indonesia, the 'commons museum' of Nuraini develops a speculative concept to imagine counter-authoritarian, decolonial institutions based on radical pedagogy, vernacular archiving, and community-based techniques of life. The design of the book, wonderfully realised by Theetat Thunkijjanukij, further performs Nuraini's investment in radical pedagogy, as well as informal knowledge production, reproduction and circulation.
In this same spirit, the book is brought to life through a participatory display companion and an afternoon of readings, music and conversations at Framer Framed. To hear more, attend Nuraini’s guided tour on the 21st of February. Audiences of different ages welcome.

For two weeks Framer Framed hosts a library of resources, including textiles, clothes, fairytale books, drawings, stickers, animal figurines, essays, and other materials that inspired the book. An ode to the multi-purpose libraries of the commons museums, the display welcomes audiences of different ages to sit down, chat, snack, read, copy, colour-in, play and make worlds!
