Alex de Vries

Alex de Vries (Erica, The Netherlands 1957) was co-founder and editor of Metropolis M., a two monthly magazine on contemporary art. He worked for Metropolis M. from 1979 until 1984. After that he worked five years for the Shaffy Theater in Amsterdam as a publicity officer and curator. In 1989 he was asked to become head of communications for the Arnhem Institute of the Arts, now part of ArtEZ Institute of the Arts.

He was founder and editor-in-chief of the quarterly magazine ‘De Kunsten’. From 1997 until 2001 he was director of the Academy of Art and Design in ’s‑Hertogenbosch. Then, in cooperation with graphic designer Jan Willem den Hartog, he started his own business as an author, curator and consultant in their office for communication in art and culture Stern / Den Hartog & De Vries (www.sternsite.nl). He has written and published many articles, catalogues and books on (Dutch) theater, art and artists and he has shown an interest in intercultural and interdisciplinary practices.

He is a member of the board of BAK basis voor actuele kunst in Utrecht. He is also a member of the committee of Art and Design of the Dutch Council for Culture and a member of the advisory board for culture of the province of Drenthe.

Alex de Vries was invited twice to act as an external reviewer to the DAI's marathon of 20 minute lecture-presentations/performances by all its students.
