Pilar Mata Dupont is a Latina visual artist and filmmaker living in Rotterdam. She uses temporal strategies of looping, fragmentation, and dislocation to delve into the fallibility of narratives of history and memory. In the process of making her video, performance, and photography works, she often explores the structures and tropes of genre narratives. Mata Dupont’s recent practice has expanded into non-linear, character-focused, and concept-driven storytelling.
She has shown her work in spaces such as Secession, Vienna; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei; Seoul Museum of Art; Seoul; Württembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart; TENT, Rotterdam; RADIUS CCA, Delft; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; Samstag Museum of Art, Adelaide; and the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, USA. In 2015, she won the Plymouth Contemporary Open, UK, and a residency prize at the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2021, she was shortlisted and awarded a development grant for a $100,000 Moving Image Commission by the Ian Potter Foundation and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. Mata Dupont graduated from the Dutch Art Institute in 2016.
