A female composer in the post-war period, a musician, a painter, a member of the Dutch Resistance, an educator and an inventor, The Hague’s very own Sedje Hémon (1923-2011) has a remarkable life story, but her artistic output, which she continued to generate up into her late 80s, speaks even louder. Her artistic urgency and compositional methods resonate with composer Iannis Xenakis, while her paintings have the precision and spiritual intention of minimalist painter Agnes Martin. Hémon’s fervent explorations of sound and image take an entirely different approach compared to the better-known figures of her generation such as Morton Feldman and John Cage.
With this new program a crucial missing piece of the cultural history of the Netherlands falls into place. The Hidden Agreements program is built around three new arrangements of Sedje Hémon’s work, and two new compositions by artist Marianna Maruyama, and composer Andrius Arutiunian, both of which will be world-premiered in The Hague. These new works depart from Hémon’s interdisciplinary approach to sound and image and engage with the work of her last years, such as physical rehabilitation methods, digital technology, and virtual worlds. The vocabulary of movement, virtual reality and digital decay – all form the core themes of the new works and relate directly to Hémon’s writings and practice.
