The Factory workshop: What, how and for whom of institutional negotiations
Factory workshop: What, how and for whom of institutional negotiations
LOCATION - The Studio @ Het Veem
Led by: Sabina Sabolović
26 November Sunday:
10:00 - 13:00 - introduction
15:00 - 18:00 - discussion & writing session
The day will explore the practice of WHW from Zagreb as a way to look at how a curatorial collective functions within the institutional framework, what problems its faces and how it negotiates the different local contexts in which it works. The presentation will also focus on the value of identifying and responding to political urgenices and the relation between the curatorial and the artists and other collaborators involved.
Sabina Sabolović talk will attempt to open up the usually hidden institutional mechanisms that influence the final artistic or curatorial outcome. The examples will include “What, How and for Whom, dedicated to 152nd Anniversay of the Communist Mainfesto” a self- organised project within an intense political context in Croatia in 2000; “Collective Creativity” a group exhibition on collectives in Kunsthalle Friedericianumin 2005, “11th Istanbul Biennial – What Keeps Mankind Alive” which tried to open up the biennial apparatus in 2009 and “Really Useful Knowledge” in Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid in 2014 which triggered a call for censorship of an artwork by Mujeras Publicas.
In the afternoon, Sabina Sabolović will invite students to discuss ways in which they would like to define artistic and institutional responsibility for themselves.
Call for contributions (deadline Wednesday morning 22 November) :
Prior to the seminar and workshop the students are invited to send Peter Sattler a brief written declaration of max 100 words in response to the question
“What three policies would you make mandatory for public art institutions in the way they treat artists?”
It is planned to turn the variety of reactions into a collective statement to be included with the other working groups statements. Monday 27 November (when the DAI will not be present) six working groups will each produce a Working Groups Statement which will be made available online, co-published with L'Internationale Online.
Please note that your statement of max 100 words, to be handed in ultimately on 22 November is conditional for participation in the day long session with WHW.
