In Deproduction, a multi-media project, Academy-member Terre Thaemlitz will investigate the awkward, uncomfortable and hypocritical power dynamics behind the Western humanist notion of family, and how they are affected by globalization. Queer families are celebrated and promoted all over the world now, but in a usual heteronormative way they promise little more than the egocentric idea that familial abuses will be resolved by next generation being better parents than the previous one. What is forever absent are discussions of what it means to deliberately not be a parent: this option remains the ultimate taboo. Aesthetically, Deproduction, which is in between a “non-performative” performance and concert, will be a continuation of Thaemlitz’s work in the fields of electroacoustic audio production, writing, images manipulation, and collage-based video work that confuses/combines the languages of documentary/cultural analysis/oral history/personal narrative. The live performance will incorporate lecture, audio/video presentation, and discussion with audience members, deliberately complicating typical entertainment expectations from both curators and audience members.
TERRE THAEMLITZ is an award-winning multimedia producer, writer, public speaker, educator, audio remixer, DJ, and owner of the Comatonse Recordings record label. As a speaker on issues of non-essentialist Transgenderism and Queerness, Thaemlitz has lectured and participated in panel discussions throughout Europe and Japan. Thaemlitz lives and works in Japan.
