November 23: Within and Against the Academy: Study, Rehearsal and Improvisation at the Rietveld Academie presents Quadrant ~ a situational performance by Joy Mariama Smith (DAI, 2017) followed by an aftertalk between the artist and Casco's Yolande van der Heide.

| tag: Amsterdam
The performance takes place in the context of Studium Generale Rietveld series of events on expanded notions of ‘study’, ‘rehearsal’ and ‘improvisation’ in relation to the art academy, art making and social life. From the making and the thinking, study is being regarded as 'unrestricted sociality', escaping fixed structures, policies and identities.

Programme
- Joy Mariama Smith presents the situational performance Quadrant. Quadrant is a new work that has been developed specifically for the  event: it relates to the expanded notions of study, rehearsal and improvisation being investigated by Studium Generale Rietveld with Within and Against the Academy: Study, Rehearsal and Improvisation.Quadrant is a participatory work that explores unrestricted sociality within the context of an institution. According to scholar and writer Fred Moten ‘study’ is ‘what you do with other people’. Built on this premise Quadrant takes the notion of ‘study’ out of the formalized setting of the classroom to re-situate and re-contextualize it together with the audience.
  • After talk with Joy Mariama Smith, Yolande van der Heide (deputy director at Casco Art Institute) and the audience.
  • Drinks and music!
A native Philadelphian currently based in Den Haag, NL, Joy Mariama Smith's work primarily addresses the conundrum of projected identities in various contexts. A sub-theme, or ongoing question in their work is: What is the interplay between the body and it's physical environment? Rooted in socially engaged art practice, they are a performance/installation/movement artist, activist, facilitator, curator and architectural designer. They have a strong improvisational practice spanning 20 years. When they choose to teach, they actively try to uphold inclusive spaces.
Yolande van der Heide is deputy director at Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons, where she began as an intern in 2008, and worked as producer to may project exhibitions including the Grand Domestic Revolution (2009 — 2012). She is co-editor to several books published with Casco including 365 Days of Invisible Work (2017) and Site for Unlearning (Art Organisation), forthcoming. She is faculty member at the Dutch Art Institute, Roaming Academy (see Southern Wave); and is thesis advisor in the Fine Arts department at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam.
