What is the relation between pain and the words we give to it? How do we look at photographs of someone who is no longer there? Should the camera do what the eyes cannot? These are some of the questions Sanne Kabalt (DAI, 2018) poses in her recent work. Her first extensive solo-exhibition 'I see you are not there' is to be seen at Beautiful Distress House, NDSM Amsterdam till August 16. Her lecture performance ‘She gave the photographs what they wanted’ is scheduled for August 1st & 15th.

She combines photography and writing into installations in the realms of illness, death, madness and loss. Here, photographs move and the camera gains a voice. 'I see you are not there' is the first extensive solo-exhibition by Sanne Kabalt in Amsterdam. It is organized by Het Vijfde Seizoen, a foundation devoted to the relation between art and mental health. The show includes the project ‘As long as you don’t talk about problems so much you won’t see them anyways’ that Sanne realized at the residency Het Vijfde Seizoen.

‘She gave the photographs what they wanted’ is a lecture-performance by Sanne Kabalt in the exhibition 'I see you are not there'. It is performed twice: Saturday August 1st at 15:00 & Saturday August 15th at 15:00. These performances are limited to an audience of 12 people at a time.

A visual medium like photography implies a focus on a static end result, a final work. More and more, however, Sanne Kabalt is interested in the process that comes before and after. The method she used to get somewhere. The questions that have remained unanswered.

In 'she gave the photographs what they wanted' the transition between the making process and the final result fades. The audience is invited into the mind of the artist, into experimentation and failure, into the ongoing attempt to convey something invisible visually to others. In her lecture-performances, Kabalt brings printed photographs, speaking, reading and singing together in one place.
