Lecture by Mia van den Bos (DAI, 2021): Stronger together: artists' unions and the political organisation of precarious workers. Starting with a brief look at the exceptional economics of the art industry and the history of artists' political organisation, this talk argues for a renewed form of artists' union that acts in solidarity with a broader movement of precarious workers. Mia's presentation is part of the the general membership meeting (GMM) of Platform Beeldende Kunst. This year's GMM will take place on Tuesday 4th of June 2024, from 18:30 to 22:00 PM in the TETlokaal in Tetterode, Bilderdijkstraat 165, Amsterdam. The assembly is open to members and non-members.

Todd Shepard’s 2017 book, Sex, France, and Arab Men, 1962–1979 (University of Chicago Press), investigates two historical phenomena not typically thought together: the aftermath of the Algerian war for independence and the movement for sexual revolution in France. His analyses, including discussions of the racist and sexist rhetoric within leftist and gay politics in France in the 1960s and ‘70s, provide a framework for thinking sexual politics against the backdrop of mid-century global decolonial movements.The Institute for Network Cooperation (INC) engages historian Todd Shepard in a consideration of the historical and contemporary relevance of his research. On Friday May 17, 2024 dozens of artists and cultural workers in Athens, Greece, organized a protest at EMST, the museum of contemporary art. The protestors called for EMST to publicly denounce the genocide and culturalcide perpertrated by Israel on the Gazan enclave. The action included the collective reading of the names of museums, heritage and cultural sites destroyed in Gaza, as well as an extensive list of artists, writers and cultural workers murdered so far. Banners were displayed calling out the art world's silence, and included signs stating "Artists Against Apartheid" and "There are no museums left in Gaza." The protest also called on EMST's current programming on women to acknowledge the 10,300 women killed in Gaza over the past 7 months. Demands included calls for cultural boycott and divestment.
