DAI Publications was founded in 2003 by DAI-director Gabriëlle Schleijpen, where the Werkplaats Typografie was invited as an initial partner. Since its inception around 100 artists' books as well as a small collection of co-produced, project-related publications have seen the light - in print as well as online.
Until 2011 annually appointed collection editors (among them Joke Robaard, Emily Pethick, Delphine Bedel and Rebecca Sakoun) supervised the series of artist publications. From 2010 till 2015, CasCo developed a regular curriculum within the DAI structure, resulting in "Publishing Class", an imprint of DAI Publications, a collection of artists' books jointly published by the DAI and CasCo – Office for Art, Design and Theory in collaboration with the Werkplaats Typografie.
Currently there are two Publishing Class curricula on offer for artists and curators studying at the DAI:
* The Publishing Class led by Open! (since 2014) works with an overarching research theme and has the online platform Open! as its discursive and creative framework.
*The Publishing Class led by Sarah Pierce and Tirdad Zolghadr (since 2016) takes the form of a group writing workshop and unfolds again in close collaboration with the Werkplaats Typografie.
