2016-2017 ROAMING ACADEMY 2: ON PRAXIS AN UNSTATED THEORY. (WRITING OUT LOUD) FROM MONTH TO MONTH

Seminar 7: Tuesday May 23rd - Wednesday May 24th, 2017

For the May session, the group will be based at the Designhuis in Eindhoven as part of the Dutch Art Institute’s partnership with the Van Abbemuseum and their programme Becoming More. Here the group will conclude the translation exercise that they have been undertaking since the commencement of the course in October 2016, and for which they have been asked to progressively translate a lecture by Euba into different media.

Framed under the title “From Score to Explanation” this session will include a collective exercise in which the students perform a sound piece based on a text that recapitulates this ongoing translation exercise. For this, the students will use the pre-recorded paragraph of the text that they were given in the previous session, and that they have subsequently reworked the sound of as they desired.

To complement this exercise, Euba will also screen a film by an artist and present a new text entitled “Desensitization towards objects” that complements previous lectures on the idea of the ‘object’ and ‘anticipation’.

Seminar 6: Tuesday April 25th - Wednesday April 26th, 2017

After ten-days working together in Morocco in March, the class will reconvene in Arnhem for the April session. Here the students will continue the exercise that they have been undertaking across the course—a progressive translation of a lecture by Euba into different media—by receiving commentary on the videos they have made based upon notated scores by another classmate.

To complement this ongoing exercise, Euba will also screen a film by an artist and present a new text entitled “The movie”. This will be followed an explanation of Euba’s Notes for the cameraperson in Re:horse and a collective exercise in which the students perform a score by Euba that has been instrumental to the development of his practice over the past ten years.

Roaming Academy, 14-24 March 2017

For the March session, the class will travel to Morocco for ten-days, spending five nights in Cassablanca working at the contemporary dance space Espace Darja, and the following five nights working in the Atlas Mountains near Ait Ben Haddou. Across this time, the students will continue an ongoing exercise that they have been undertaking across the course, and in which they have been asked to progressively translate a lecture by Euba into different media. They will do this by using five scores (notated in visuals, writing, or both) by another person in the class to make five videos based on them.

During the trip, Euba will also present two new texts that recapitulate this ongoing translation exercise. One of the new texts will be read and translated live by Euba, and the other will be presented as part of a practical exercise developed by the students. These texts will also complement the previous lectures on the idea of the ‘object’ and ‘anticipation’, by working with the concept of the ‘version’. Screening of visual material by other artists, and a session analyzing the video material produced by the students, alongside other group activities, will round out the trip.

Seminar 4: Tuesday February 14th - Wednesday February 15th, 2017

For the February session, the students will continue the exercise that they commenced in the previous three classes, and in which they have been asked to progressively translate a lecture by Euba into different media. For this each student has prepared five scores (notated in visuals, writing, or both) from the moving image translations that they made previously. During the class these scores will be given to another person who will make five videos based on them.

During this session, Euba will also present a new text based on the idea of the ‘object’, which follows on from the previous session’s lecture “Some-thing-to-see-no-thing-to-say”. Complementing this activity will be a screening of visual material on the subject of ‘interpretation’ from the fields of music and linguistics.

Seminar 3: Tuesday January 17th - Wednesday January 18th, 2017

In the January session the students will continue the exercise that they commenced in the previous two classes, and in which they were asked to translate a lecture by Euba into different media. In the first class the students used drawing to make simultaneous translations, then later consecutive translations, of the text. In the second session they were asked to translate these still images into moving images and actions using an instrument of objective vision. To assist with this, exercises of adaptation, extension, reduction and compensation were undertaken to reflect on the idea of the frame; objective, subjective and objectified visions; and their relation with action.

During this session, Euba will analyze the recorded translations made by each of the students and provide further directions to them. The screening of works by other artists will complement this activity.

Seminar 2: Tuesday December 13th - Wednesday December 14th, 2016

In the December session the students will continue an exercise that they commenced in the previous class, and in which they were asked to translate a lecture by Euba, entitled “On Visions, Images and Non Images (Objective view / Subjective view / Objectified vision = Camera / Performer / Director / Audience)”, into different media. In this class, the students used drawing to first make simultaneous translations then later consecutive translations of the text. For the December class, the group will be asked to translate the still images they created into moving images and actions. To assist with this, exercises of adaptation, extension, reduction and compensation will be undertaken to reflect on the idea of the frame; objective, subjective and objectified visions; and their relation with action. These exercises will be introduced by viewing artworks by Euba and other artists.

Seminar 1: Tuesday October 25th - Wednesday October 26th, 2016

The October session is the first of seven workshops, and will act as an introduction to the course, as well as to Jon Mikel Euba and each of the students’ respective artistic practices. Working from the idea of ‘abundance’, the workshop will commence with a collective reading of Euba’s text “On Visions and Images”. During the reading the students will be asked to produce first a simultaneous and a consecutive translation of the text through drawing, and later translate these drawings into other media. Each student will also be asked to undertake an exercise where they identify how many moments of new beginnings they have had in their life, and note the technical difficulties associated to these beginnings in each period.

As part of the session each of the students will also have an individual face-to-face meeting with Jon Mikel Euba and Susan Gibb.
